Planning Your Triathlon Training

Hi all,

Thank you to everyone who is following our Facebook and Twitter, and well done to Liz who won a free family swim voucher to any Teignbridge pool for answering my question about Sports Bug. Keep your eyes peeled for more prizes and competitions.

Good luck to Rich in your Ultra, only days away now. And well done to Laura who won the Trailscape on Halloween.

This month’s blog is about personalised training plans.

These reflect the individual needs of athletes, obtained from:

·         Critical swim speed (as per ‘Swim Smooth’ and the Arthy calculator –   (http://www.arhy.org/swim-predict);

·         Bike threshold tests (as per Allen and Coggan ‘Training and Racing With a Power Meter’ –  see also http://www.joefrielsblog.com/2010/05/quick-guide-to-training-with-heart-rate-power-and-pace.html);

·         For running, the Jack Daniels Vdot formula (runsmartproject.com/coaching/dr-jack-daniels).

When taking on a new athlete for training-plan coaching, I follow four steps:

(i) Assessment: Identifying your goals, strengths and weaknesses are and defining your training zones, which can differ considerably between disciplines (Olbrecht, ‘The Science of Winning’).

(ii) Planning: Creating an annual training plan. Setting out the correct frequency, intensity, time and type of training needed to reach your goal.

(iii) Implementing: Putting the annual plan into action via weekly session plans. For example, early in the season, this might focus on technique and endurance, while later in the season, speed might come more into play.

(iv) Monitoring: There are various ways to monitor training, for example a scale of perceived exertion or a heart monitor. By monitoring training accurately you can ensure training is specific and correctly implemented.

So you see that by having a training plan, whether it is one set by yourself or a coach, you can improve your chances of success in racing.  The assessing, planning, implementing and monitoring are all important components to planning your training.  As you work through your plan you repeat the cycle: re-assess, re-plan .etc.

My training plan services comprise of four main choices:

(i) You must have a BRONZE PLAN whatever you decide to do.  This involves the assessment and planning components.

(ii) You can opt to Bronze Plan bolt-on all your training sessions up to your race.

(iii) A SILVER PLAN and GOLD PLAN each include weekly training plans and coaching.  The plans are updated and adjusted as you go. The Gold Plan also includes coached fitness tests and face to face sessions every month.

Now is a great time to set up your plan. At this point in the year, you can maintain your fitness, ability and technique, and be ready to get in the full swing of training when the next triathlon season comes around. What are your goals next season?

Lets us know!

Pete
