January Blog From Pete

Hi Guys,

This blog is from Pete to quickly bring you up to date with what’s happening at PeteWilbyTriathlOn.   To tell you about what Laura and I have been up to this winter.  And to share the cool challenges to face people in 2016.  Enjoy.

Coastal Running

I hope your 2016 has kicked off smartly.  Laura and I kicked off the New Year with a run around the Geopark Adventure Rock Run Route (which Laura was keen to show me after winning last year’s race).  It was very wet and muddy.  I was very drunk the night before.  But what a fantastic route.  Personally I think all the best run routes are along the coast.  Just before Christmas I completed my first 50km Ultra race - a coastal run around Portsmouth Harbour.  It had a nice mix of terrain but most importantly it never left the sea behind.  I love that seaweed scent.

It makes me appreciate Teignmouth.  Teignmouth is a great place to train for these events.  We have a flat coastal marathon on our left and a hilly as hell one to our right (when looking out to sea).  Next weekend Laura and I are travelling to Portland for more coastal running at the Buskinskin marathon.  We are meeting with coached athletes Natasha Gee and Richard ‘Ultra Runner’ Carus.  Looking forward to chatting about training and another brilliant route.

Swimming the English Channel

Way back in the last century my swimming club mates and I dreamed about how one day we would have a swimming pool in our back garden, next to the helicopter pad, outside our big house (which we shared) in a tree with a zip wire to get down.  We dreamt big.  Nothing ever came of those dreams.  But one of my swimming club mates, Tom Garrett, is going about living his dream this year by swimming the English Channel.  Wow!  He will cover around 50km through water without a wetsuit in temperatures of 14 -17 degrees.  Since the first crossing in 1875 there have been 1810 solo swims by 1429 solo swimmers.  Attempts are much higher though, the success rate is only 20%.  We are supporting Tom all the way with on hand coaching advice and training weekends here in Teignmouth.  We will be in the support boat when he makes his crossing.  If you would like to support Tom he is raising money for a very good cause which you can read about on his Virgin Money Giving page here  (www.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-web/fundraiser/showFundraiserProfilePage.action?userUrl=tomgarrettsbigswim2016).

The Endless Pool

The swimming pool dream may not be so farfetched these days either.  Thanks to Richard ‘Ultra Runner’ Carus and his contacts in the triathlon world we may be able to start some coaching in an endless pool.  An endless pool has mirrors at the bottom so you can really work on neatening up your stroke.  You never break your rythem with a turn on the wall.  The moving water simulates open water very accurately.  If this is something you would be interested in then drop me a line: pete@petewilbytriathlon.co.uk

Entering Races

There are absolutely loads of races to choose from.  Triathlon is booming.  But this means you have to be quick on entering.  Lots of coached athletes are going for the Dart 10km swim this September.  If you are interested in this sign up to the OSS website for an alert on when entries open.

Laura and I are running the inaugural Titan Dartmoor training camp in  May (www.petewilbytriathlon.com/#!training-camps/c175).  The Titan Dartmoor is a middle distance race (1900m swim, 100km bike, and 21km run) with over 6000ft of climbing.  It would be rude not to enter it too.  Why not join us.  You can enter at (www.dbmax.co.uk/event-list/triathlon/item/titan-dartmoor.html).

If you want to do more than one race, why not enter a series.  Laura is hoping to retain her series champion trophy from the Exeter Aquathlon events (www.exetertri.co.uk/events2016).  Both Laura and I have picked four races from the Freak Events series races.  Freak Events have loads of exciting events to choose from.  You can find out more at: www.freakevents.co.uk.  If you enter, use my discount code (for athletes and affiliates only), you will get 10% off all races: PW16.

If you are quick, Freak Events are also giving 50% off entries to the Weston-Super-Mare Triathlon 26th June, the Clevedon Triathlon on 11th September and the Grand Pier Half Marathon on 6th November if you use code: BLUEMONDAY.

Lastly, going back to the fantastic Rock Run route - that Laura guided me around (hung over as hell) on New year’s day - GeoPark Adventure have a great choice of fantastic events.  Drop Brendon a heads up if you currently have coaching with us and he will give you a discount.  (www.geoparkadventure.com).

What are you going to wear?

Natasha Gee is really pleased with her new running trainers.  She bought them to ware in before her coastal 10km on Sunday.  Laura is loving her new TomTom Cardio watch.  She has a resting heart rate of 35 which makes her clinically dead every other second.  I am really happy with my new Ceepo Mamba road bike provided by the Rekosports racing team (www.rekosports.com).  If anyone is after a new wetsuit for 2016 then phone Liz at Route 2 bike shop in Topsham:  01392 879 168.  She has a stack of 2015 BlueSeventy wetsuits all half price (www.route2bikes.co.uk).

That’s all from me.  Drop me a line at pete@petewilbytriathlon.co.uk about any coaching questions.  Keep checking the facebook and twitter pages about things going on and keep us up to date with how you are getting on and what you are doing.  If you are a coached athlete you should know, I love watching you do triathlon.  Tell us where you are going so we can cheer you on.

Happy triathlon-ing,

Pete and Laura
