LIFE
Life is the most important part of you. Our very consciousness is because of life. For life to be good you must do your best to maintain a healthy balance. Triathlon and open water swim training could certainly be a refreshing and uplifting addition to your life. Nevertheless, life is more important than training and should be top of your priorities all the time.
Priorities when fitting training into life are: #1 life, #2 work, studies or family and friends, #3 training. All three are crucial (albeit for some training might more simply be, exercise). As Einstein once said 'life is like riding a bicycle, to keep balance, you must keep moving'.
Parts of life which I believe are crucial for a well balanced, healthy life are:
By quantifying and monitoring stress (training stress, work stress, school stress, relationships, finances, to name but a few) you can be better at managing life.

Parts of life which I believe are crucial for a well balanced, healthy life are:
- your sleep (your circadian rhythm, that is the fluctuation of deep REMS sleep and light nREMS sleep, will greatly affect your physical and mental health. Inadequate sleep negatively affects your thinking and bodily control, it could lead to stress, anxiety, depression and even diabetes),
- your stress (the body's reaction to feeling pressure, bad or good, can be motivating but also catastrophic. Stress can build up and can be affected by just about anything causing a significant impact on physical and mental health).
- Your well-being (how comfortable or happy you are in the past, the moment and how you feel about the future).
Physical health and mental health take equal priority and work on a constantly changing spectrum. When looking through the PeteWilbyTriathlOn LENS you should prioritise the roof of life above all. Keep a lid on endurance training and keep the all-encompassing level of stress from increasing or reducing drastically, or beyond what is undesirable or dangerous.
This video nicely illustrates stress and the good and bad effects of it. There is a good app called HRV4training used by most PeteWilbyTriathlOn coached athletes, which helps you monitor stress and allows you to better adapt to the varying levels (see our blog on maximising the benefits of training). A good book to read on mind management is Chimp Paradox by Dr Steve Peters. There is a fantastic app called Head Space where you can learn the art of mindfulness. Another good book called Why We Sleep, by Mathew Walker is well worth reading.
